This shop used to be Swain's bakery shop, the space above the corner door used to have the word SWAIN printed there and on the Charles street side the words painted between the roof and the top of the window "Swain Baker". The shop was according to "A picture book of Old Herne Bay" by Harold Gough "opened by Gaylor Swain from Sandwich in 1829. The business remained in the family until after the Second World War,..." The shop went from Gaylor to his son, William then grandson William to his great grandson, Roy Swain.
Roy was my wife's grandad,Roy son John Swain used deliver the goods to locals. I never really knew the history thanks.
Is there any photos when it was a bakery
